When a child struggles with reading and spelling, it can affect much more than their schoolwork. It can be frustrating and discouraging, especially when they are bright and capable but aren't making the progress they should.

 

Reading Works uses the Barton Reading & Spelling System, a structured, multi-sensory, phonics-based programme designed especially for students with dyslexia and other learning difficulties.

 

The Barton programme is based on the principles of the Orton-Gillingham approach, which uses explicit, systematic and multi-sensory teaching to help students understand how reading and spelling work.  Barton teaches the building blocks of reading and spelling in a clear, step-by-step way. We start at Level 1 to make sure the foundations are strong and that there are no gaps in your child's learning. We then work through the programme at your child's own pace, moving forward as each new skill is mastered.

 

Barton recommends two 45 minute sessions each week to provide regular practice and keep learning moving forward.  However, I understand that this isn't possible for every family.  I also work with students once a week and have seen great progress with this approach.  The most important thing is that your child gets consistent, structured support at a frequency that works for your family.

 

Lessons are one-to-one and tailored to the individual student. 

 

I usually tutor at your child's school, but sessions can also be held at my home, your home or online.
